How to choose a Bali home for longer stays
A practical way to look beyond the first impression and choose a villa that will still feel comfortable after the holiday feeling fades.

Many Bali villas are designed to photograph beautifully or host a short stay. A home for months or years has a more demanding job. Before falling for the pool, ask how the entire house will support the days that happen around it.
“Choose for the ordinary days. They are where a beautiful property becomes a good home.”
Start with the life you will live
Begin with routines rather than rooms. Who wakes first? Does anyone work from home? How often do family or friends stay? Where do school bags, groceries and luggage land? The clearest brief for a home is a normal week written honestly.
This also helps separate a true need from an attractive extra. A fourth bedroom that can become a study may support daily life more than an oversized entertaining area that is used occasionally.
Read the layout as a sequence
A floor plan should be read as movement: arriving with shopping, preparing breakfast, moving between the living room and pool, putting children to bed and welcoming overnight guests. Look for natural paths that do not cut through private areas or make simple tasks feel awkward.
Good separation helps too. Shared spaces can remain open and social while bedrooms sit far enough away to feel restful. A ground-floor guest room can give visiting family independence and make the home more adaptable over time.
Notice what the photographs do not show
Ask where laundry is handled, how much closed storage exists, where maintenance equipment lives and whether parking works for the household. These details rarely lead a brochure, yet they have an outsized effect on whether a home stays calm and uncluttered.
In a tropical climate, shaded transitions, airflow and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces also deserve attention. The aim is not simply to open the doors, but to make both sides of the house comfortable and usable.
Choose the neighbourhood with the same care
A beautiful house in the wrong daily location can become tiring quickly. Test the journeys that matter to you at the times you would actually make them: school, groceries, healthcare, exercise, the beach and visits with friends.
Think beyond drive times. Consider whether the neighbourhood offers several ways to spend an ordinary morning or evening, and whether it feels comfortable across different seasons and family routines.
Ask the questions that protect the long view
Before deciding, understand what is included, how the home will be maintained, how the community is managed and which documents govern the purchase. Marketing can introduce the opportunity; the final decision should be supported by plans, specifications and independent professional advice suited to your circumstances.
- Does the layout work for a real week, not only a weekend?
- Are private, shared and practical spaces all properly resolved?
- Can the home adapt as work and family needs change?
- Have you reviewed the plans, inclusions and legal structure carefully?
